OneVision aims to automise Asia's print workflows

Print software company, OneVision, recently appointed Tim Klappe as managing director of the Asia Pacific arm of the business. With the appointment of the print veteran, the German software company sets out on a mission to automate print processes in Asia Pacific.

Klappe looks forward to tackling his new professional challenges: “My main task will be to increase OneVision’s prominence. In principle, the applications deliver exactly the type of solutions printing companies and publishers are seeking for prepress and premedia activities to enable them to work with greater efficiency and speed, and in higher quality. Unfortunately, that has remained a well-kept secret up to now in the region in and around Southeast Asia and Australia. I therefore must and want to change that as soon as possible.”

OneVision develops and offers software solutions for printing, publishing, and media industries. Its repertoire of software solutions appears to be created with one keyword in mind: automation. Klappe continued to say that he was attracted to OneVision due to the fact that its software solutions are helping guide the transition to digital printing and digital publishing.

“Good workflows and tools are the most important prerequisites for smooth-running printing and high print quality. OneVision’s software solutions cover cover the different printing processes and take away all the pain points and bottlenecks you experience in the processes at the prepress or pre-publishing stage,” said Klappe.

To better understand the scope of their solutions offerings, there are essentially four solution categories – workflow, prepress solutions, image enhancement and digital publishing. Just prior to drupa, OneVision recently introduced updates to its star products – Workspace Pro, Asura and Amendo.

Workflow – Workspace Pro

Workspace Pro is a database driven and browser-based front end platform for OneVision’s products. Aiming to increase workflow automation, the software tool offers users customizable layout options for the production workflow.

Workspace Pro is easy to learn and use, and allows both printers and publishers to remotely monitor, track, manage and control every job throughout the production process. Additional functions such as order control, job ticket, or file renaming in a rule-based manner allow prepress operators to have comprehensive insight into their production workflows.

The latest update of Workspace Pro is empowered with new features that can further increase job processing performance. A configurable job list update is able to increase throughput and simplify the operation of the job list, even at peak times. Workspace Pro users can now lodge job status information and job queue description, to enable better oversight and control of jobs.

Prepress – Asura

A prepress solution that runs on the Workspace platform is Asura. Asura is OneVision’s flagship solution that aims to automate the prepress stage of the print production line. The programme is able to automate and streamline the preflighting, optimisation and normalisation processes in print production. The software allows error identification and correction to be done automatically as part of the workflow, to cut down significant time and costs.

Asura offers users a fully automated quality control for print files at the pre-press stage with subsequent optimisation of the PDF files. The solution is able to automatically check, correct and output to several formats including PDF, EPS and PostScript.

The latest version of Asura allows for even greater optimisation. Asura’s data ‘laundry’ system is now less complex and easier to operate, to further reduce work time requirements. The new version is now equipped with a new 4D colour management technology for seamless integration of the new standard colour profiles in job and newspaper printing. This helps prevent gauge pin problems and reduces the potential for complaint.

Image Enhancement – Amendo

Amendo is OneVision’s answer to automated image enhancement. The image editing solution, which runs on the Workspace Pro platform, delivers enhanced images in the shortest time possible, and at a consistently high standard.

With its most recent update, the software is now enabled with a series of innovations to further increase automation in image enhancement and boost time and cost efficiencies.

One of which is a new file attribute, ‘Image Definition’, that allows images to be routed automatically by degree of definition. This feature automatically reduces sharpness parameters of images when analysis shows that the image is already sufficiently sharp. Brightness optimisation is another new feature which enables the adjustment of depth and light in an image.

Amendo is additionally equipped with a ‘process meta data’ module that is capable of processing all EXIF, IPTC and XMP meta data. Amendo’s existing feature, ‘tone down skin impurity’, now includes three additional options so that users can achieve even finer adjustment of skin tone modulations.

Digital Publishing – Mirado

This branch of the software company is considered its newest. Under this category is the Mirado software, which facilitates the publishing of print media on an online platform. Targeted at media companies, Mirado enables publications to easily prepare, enhance and publish digital editions of print publications through a user-friendly interface.

In addition, the software allows the digital version of the publication to embed features such as slideshows, video and audio so readers can have a richer and interactive experience online. Media companies can also make use of a comprehensive readership analytics tool included in the software.

To get from design to digital publishing stage, there are three phases to the Mirado process. The first phase is preparation, in which Mirado automatically prepares content for publication from the final PDF input. Pre-production work such as cropping, trimming, page splitting, section detection and numbering is processed at this stage. The second step is enrichment, where publishers will be able to interactively add media, links and repurposing pages with the Mirado Editor. The last step is deployment. At this stage, the content is published on the target platform using Mirado’s deployment tool.

The digital versions can be published to a cloud or the customers’ own data center for worldwide distribution. Mirado’s capabilities allow publications to explore cross-media campaigns, and potentially increase revenue opportunities.
